LIHEAP cash grant

$200 to $1,000

A one-time grant sent straight to your utility or fuel dealer and credited to your bill. You never pay it back. The amount depends on household size, income and fuel type.

Extra help

For a heating emergency: broken equipment or leaking lines, no fuel, the main heat source shut off, less than 15 days of fuel, or a notice that service will be shut off within 60 days.

The dates

The state page says the 2025-2026 season is closed and the 2026-2027 season is scheduled to open on November 2, 2026. We will update this page when the state confirms the opening or changes the date. Until then, do not rely on a third-party site for the date; the Department of Human Services page is the one that counts.

Who qualifies

You need to meet the income guidelines. For the 2026-2027 season the limit is $23,940 a year for one person, $32,460 for two, $40,980 for three and $49,500 for four. For every extra person, add $8,520. These limits took effect February 1, 2026. You do not have to be on public assistance. You do not need an unpaid heating bill. You can rent or own your home.

What you get

The regular grant is a one-time cash payment of $200 to $1,000. It goes to your utility or fuel provider, not to you, and it shows up as a credit on your account. It will not cover a whole winter, so think of it as a way to ease the worst months, not a way to stop worrying about the bill.

Crisis grants

A crisis grant is for an emergency. If you have not yet received a regular grant this season, you must apply for the program to be considered. If you already got a regular grant and a heating emergency happens, the state says to contact your local County Assistance Office.

How to get ready

Before November 2, gather proof of income for everyone in your home, your latest heating bill or fuel account number, and your household details. Having these in one folder makes the application quick. Pennsylvania also posts brochures in several languages on the same page, including Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Vietnamese.

If you are in a heat pump or insulation project

LIHEAP pays bills. It does not replace a rebate for a new heat pump or insulation. If your furnace is old and costly to run, see the Pennsylvania rebate pages below. Lower bills over many years are what a new system or better insulation buys you.

Keep this page in mind for November

On opening day, phone lines and websites are busy. Have your documents together the night before. If you apply online, double-check that every household member is listed and that your income figures match your pay stubs or benefit letters.

What to do in Pennsylvania this winter

  1. Check that your household income is under the limit for your size.
  2. Collect proof of income, a recent heating bill and ID for everyone in the home.
  3. Watch the state page for the November 2 opening, then apply the first week.
  4. If you lose heat before then, call your County Assistance Office and ask about crisis help.
  5. Look at insulation and heat pump rebates so next winter costs less.
