Heat pump money for Aurora homes in 2026
Amounts and rules below are from ComEd's and Nicor Gas's own pages.
ComEd ducted heat pump
Discount on your installer's invoice. The amount depends on size (under or over 2.5 tons) and efficiency tier.
ComEd ductless mini-split
For rooms or additions without ducts. Must meet the higher efficiency level.
ComEd thermostat add-on
An extra $75 when your heat pump contractor installs an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat with the heat pump.
Nicor Gas furnace rebate
Only if you replace a gas furnace with a better gas furnace. It is not for heat pumps.
ComEd Whole Home Electric
Income-eligible homes. 2026 money for gas-heated homes is allocated, and the program is expected to reopen in January 2027.
Federal home energy credit
No federal heat pump credit after December 31, 2025.
ComEd's heat pump page says no application is needed. A ComEd heat pump-trained contractor applies the discount on the invoice, and a self-install does not qualify.
Aurora homes in numbers
The Census Bureau's survey for 2020 to 2024 counts 63,763 homes in Aurora. Owners are 66.4% of households and renters 33.6%. Detached houses are 58.7% of homes and attached houses 16.6%. Buildings of two to four homes are 8.7%. A landlord's approval matters for only about a third of households. The City of Aurora's own electric aggregation page confirms that ComEd delivers electricity in Aurora.
Gas now, electric later
Utility gas heats 82.5% of Aurora homes and electricity 14.8%. Bottled gas heats 1.5% and fuel oil 0.2%. For the gas-heated majority, a heat pump can replace the air conditioner and cut furnace use. Some owners keep the furnace for the coldest days. ComEd's page does not require the furnace to be removed, but it does require the heat pump to be installed by a trained contractor.
Nicor's furnace rebate is for gas replacing gas, so choose between them for the same job. A new gas furnace earns $150 or $225. A heat pump earns a ComEd discount. Compare total cost, not only the rebate.
How old are Aurora homes
Aurora's stock is younger than Chicago's. The survey says 42.5% of homes were built before 1980 and 13.5% before 1940, while 24.8% were built since 2000. Newer homes often have ducts, which suits a ducted heat pump and the higher ComEd tiers. Older homes may need duct repairs or a mini-split. Ask your installer to test duct leakage, and consider sealing with the Nicor Gas air sealing rebate of $500 first.
Pick the right tier
ComEd's top tier needs 17 SEER2 and 8.5 HSPF2 for a ducted unit. For a unit of 2.5 tons or more the discount can reach $2,000. Smaller units reach $1,500. A mini-split needs 17 SEER2 and 9.0 HSPF2. SEER2 is the cooling score and HSPF2 is the heating score. Ask for the AHRI certificate number, which proves the ratings.
