Windsor's sun is the reason batteries here pencil out differently

Windsor has the strongest solar resource of any city we track in Ontario: 4.03 peak sun hours a day on the 2020-2024 average, the only city in our coverage over 4.0. That means a Windsor solar system produces real surplus most sunny afternoons. That surplus is exactly what a battery is built to catch: instead of exporting it back to the grid at Enwin's lower buy-back rate, you store it and use it after dinner when your own usage picks up. In a lot of Ontario cities the sun isn't strong enough to make that trade obviously worth it; here it usually is.

ENWIN Utilities, Windsor's city-owned distributor (separate from both Alectra and Hydro One), doesn't set the rebate amount, but it does set your export terms and interconnection process, and its own emergency planning guidance already tells residents to have backup power ready for extended outages. A battery is a more capable version of the flashlights-and-radio kit the utility itself recommends. The City of Windsor's environment page lists rooftop solar and home-level storage among the actions under its own community climate plan.

Common questions

How much is the home battery rebate in Windsor?

Up to $5,000 on its own, or up to $10,000 stacked with the solar rebate: $300 per kWh installed, capped at 50% of total system cost, same as everywhere in Ontario.

Does pairing battery with solar make more sense in Windsor than elsewhere?

Arguably yes. Windsor's 4.03 peak sun hours a day is the highest figure of any Ontario city on this site, so a well-sized solar system here tends to generate more midday surplus than a typical homeowner can use in real time. A battery captures that surplus instead of exporting it at Enwin's lower rate.

What does Enwin recommend for outage preparedness?

Enwin's own emergency planning page tells residents to keep flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio on hand for extended outages. A home battery system is the same idea scaled up. It keeps the fridge, furnace fan, and medical equipment running instead of just the lights.
