Heat Pump Water Heater Rebates in Halifax

If your Halifax home heats water with an electric tank, a heat pump water heater is one of the easiest upgrades to get paid for. Efficiency Nova Scotia takes $800 off at the store, and with Nova Scotia Power's high rate, the savings add up faster here than in most of Canada.

Which way to claim

If a water heater is the only thing you are doing, take the instant rebate at the store. It is simpler and you get the money right away. If you are also planning a heat pump or insulation, book a Home Energy Assessment first and claim everything together, because the assessment is the only way to get those other rebates.

Which models qualify

The heat pump water heater must be ENERGY STAR certified. Efficiency Nova Scotia's assessment guide also sets an efficiency floor: a Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) of 2.00 or higher for tanks under 56 gallons, and 2.20 or higher for 56 gallons and up. The model's UEF is printed on its spec sheet and on the ENERGY STAR listing. The instant rebate applies at the till on listed models, so check the shelf tag or ask staff before you pay.

Is it worth it in Halifax?

Nova Scotia Power charges 19.128 cents per kWh, plus a $20.08 monthly base charge. That is a high rate, so every kWh you stop using is worth more here. A heat pump water heater moves heat from the air around it into the water, so it uses much less power than a standard electric element to heat the same amount.

The math works best when your old electric tank is near the end of its life anyway. You are buying a tank either way, and the $800 rebate narrows the price gap. Replacing a tank that still works is a harder case. Our Nova Scotia savings calculator uses the current NS Power rate if you want your own number.

Halifax homes: where it fits

A heat pump water heater needs space around it and cools the room it sits in. That suits a basement or utility room. Statistics Canada's 2021 Census counted about 90,830 single-detached houses in Halifax, just under half of all households, and those are the homes most likely to have the space. About 68,750 Halifax households live in apartment buildings, where water heating is often shared or a small closet tank. Those homes usually can't fit one. Measure the space and the clearance the model asks for before you buy.

About 45% of Halifax households live in homes built before 1981. Older homes often have an unfinished basement, which is a good spot. If your basement runs cold in winter, the unit will work a bit harder. Most models switch to a backup element when they need to.

Gas, oil or propane water heater?

The instant rebate is for the heat pump water heater, not for what you are replacing. But the savings case changes. Replacing an oil-fired water heater or a propane tank removes a fuel bill entirely, and that switch can save more than replacing an electric tank. Ask your installer whether your plumbing and electrical panel can handle the change, since many heat pump models need a dedicated circuit.

Common questions

How much is the heat pump water heater rebate in Halifax?

$800 from Efficiency Nova Scotia, either off the price at a participating store or through a Home Energy Assessment. You can't get both.

Do I need a home energy assessment for the water heater rebate?

No. The instant rebate at participating retailers needs no assessment. The assessment route is useful only if you are doing other upgrades too.

Which heat pump water heaters qualify in Nova Scotia?

ENERGY STAR certified models. Through the assessment, the Uniform Energy Factor must be at least 2.00 for tanks under 56 gallons and at least 2.20 for larger ones.

Can I put a heat pump water heater in a Halifax apartment?

Usually not. It needs open space around it and a room it can cool slightly, which most apartment closets don't have. Check the model's clearance needs before buying.
