What a heat pump costs in Halifax

Price source: Canadian Climate Institute and Dunsky, Heat Pumps Pay Off (2023 dollars, modelled for Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montréal and Halifax). Rebates: our verified program data, checked monthly. Always confirm the exact amount for your home.

What Halifax's winter means for your heat pump

In Halifax, the average January low is -6°C, and the coldest temperature recorded from 2015-2024 was -26°C. That's milder than 41% of the 123 cities we track. Choose a cold-climate model, and compare heating output at -20°C, not just at mild temperatures. Keeping some backup heat for rare deep-cold snaps is common and sensible.

Before you hire a heat pump installer

1. Ask for a room-by-room heat loss calculation. A quote that guesses the size from square footage alone is a red flag.
2. Ask for the exact model and its heating output at your area's coldest temperature, not just the brand.
3. Ask who handles the rebate paperwork and whether the model is on your rebate program's eligible list.

Before you call anyone, check what heat pump rebates you can get in Halifax. Many programs require approval or a registered contractor before work starts.
