What Fort McMurray homeowners can claim
We're going to be straight with you: Fort McMurray has less rebate access than almost anywhere else we cover in Alberta. There is no dedicated municipal program, no participation in the province's main financing scheme, and no local utility-run incentive layer. If you've read rebate guides written for Calgary or Edmonton and assumed the same numbers apply here, they don't.
🔥 Heat Pump
No CEIP financing and no confirmed Wood Buffalo or Alberta-wide heat pump rebate. ATCO Electric is the local distribution utility — check with them directly before assuming any current efficiency program applies. The federal Canada Greener Homes Loan is closed to new applications, so it's no longer an option.
☀️ Solar
No province-wide or Wood Buffalo solar rebate exists. Net metering through ATCO Electric is the main financial mechanism available to offset installation costs here.
🔌 Battery Storage
No dedicated battery storage incentive exists in Alberta, and no CEIP financing to offset one here either.
🌡️ Insulation
No CEIP financing in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, unlike Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, and St. Albert. CMHC Eco Plus (a partial mortgage insurance premium refund) may still apply if you qualify.
💧 Water Heater
No flat rebate program confirmed, and no CEIP financing available. Check with ATCO Electric directly for any current efficiency offers before buying.
🟩 Windows & Doors
No standalone rebate, and no CEIP financing available for this here the way Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, and St. Albert homeowners can access.
🚘 EV Charger
No confirmed residential EV charger rebate anywhere in Alberta as of 2026, and none specific to Wood Buffalo.
🌡️ Smart Thermostat
Unlike Red Deer's own city rebate, there is no RMWB or ATCO smart thermostat rebate confirmed for this area.
💨 HRV / Ventilation
No standalone rebate and no CEIP financing available in Wood Buffalo to cover an HRV/ERV upgrade.
💾 Appliances
No dedicated Northland Utilities or Alberta appliance rebate as of 2026.
Rebate finder, by category
Filter the breakdown above by category. Almost every line reads the same way here: no local program, so what's left is federal financing and whatever ATCO Electric may run on its own.
No confirmed local rebate
No CEIP and no confirmed Wood Buffalo or Alberta-wide heat pump rebate. The federal Canada Greener Homes Loan is closed to new applications, so it's no longer an option.
No confirmed local rebate
No province-wide or Wood Buffalo solar rebate. Net metering through ATCO Electric is the main way to offset installation costs.
No city or CEIP program
No CEIP financing in Wood Buffalo. CMHC Eco Plus (a partial mortgage insurance premium refund) is the one confirmed path, and only for homeowners who qualify for it.
No rebate found
No flat rebate confirmed and no CEIP financing. Ask ATCO Electric directly about any current efficiency offer before buying.
No rebate, no financing
No cash rebate for home battery storage anywhere in Alberta, and no CEIP financing in Wood Buffalo to cover one either.
No rebate, no financing
No cash rebate for window replacement in Alberta, and Wood Buffalo isn't a CEIP participant, so the financing path other cities have isn't open here.
No confirmed rebate
No provincial or utility rebate for home EV chargers anywhere in Alberta. Federal EVCP/ZEVIP funding reaches businesses and municipalities, not single-family homeowners.
No rebate found
Some Alberta cities run their own smart thermostat rebate (Red Deer, for example). Wood Buffalo does not, and neither does ATCO Electric currently.
Full category guides are linked above. Nearly every one leads to the same honest answer for Fort McMurray right now: check with ATCO Electric directly, and lean on federal financing.
CEIP: not available in Wood Buffalo
Alberta's Clean Energy Improvement Program lets homeowners in participating municipalities finance eligible upgrades — solar, insulation, heat pumps — through their property tax bill, repaid over up to 20 years. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is not a participating municipality, unlike Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, and St. Albert. Check the current CEIP participating municipalities list →
No municipal utility, no municipal rebate program
Unlike some Alberta municipalities that layer their own incentives on top of utility offers, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo doesn't run a homeowner rebate, loan, or clean-energy financing program of any kind. It also isn't set up to run one through its own electric utility — council rejected a proposal in September 2026 to start a municipal utility in the region. ATCO Electric remains the sole distribution utility here, and there's no local layer of incentives sitting on top of what ATCO itself might offer.

Renting or living in a condo?
If you rent
Since there's no dedicated rebate program here to begin with, this matters less than in other cities — but the rules are the same: any upgrade goes to whoever owns the equipment, so as a tenant you can't personally claim anything related to a heat pump or solar install. That decision, and the cost, sits with your landlord.
If you own a condo unit
In-unit upgrades you're personally responsible for — a water heater, an in-suite heat pump — would go through the same limited channels as any other Fort McMurray homeowner (ATCO Electric directly, federal financing), as long as your condo board signs off on anything touching shared systems or the building exterior.
If it's a whole-building retrofit
Honestly: with no CEIP financing and no municipal program in Wood Buffalo, there's no confirmed building-wide or condo-corporation incentive path here at all. A condo board looking at a building-wide heat pump or solar project should contact ATCO Electric directly to ask what, if anything, might apply at the corporation level, and look at federal financing options rather than assume a local program exists.
