What the $400 covers
It is a flat rebate on the unit, not a share of the cost. You pay the installer, then claim the $400 from PPL. Check Best Offers on PPL's store in case your household qualifies for extra help.
Why it fits many Allentown homes
The US Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) shows 39.5% of Allentown households heat with electricity and 14.1% with fuel oil. Homes like these often heat water the same way. An electric tank swapped for a heat pump model uses much less power. An oil-fired water heater swapped for one means fewer oil deliveries.
Gas homes (44.2% of households) save less, since gas water heating is already fairly cheap. A heat pump model can still make sense if you plan to leave gas over time.
How a heat pump water heater works
A plain electric tank heats water with a metal element, like a kettle. A heat pump water heater works more like a fridge in reverse. A small fan pulls warm air over a coil, a compressor moves that heat into the tank, and the cooled air blows out the side. Because it moves heat instead of making it, it uses far less electricity for the same hot shower.
Most models also have a backup element and a few modes. Heat pump only is the cheapest to run. Hybrid mode uses the element when you need a lot of hot water fast, for example on a busy morning. If your family is large, ask about tank size so you don't lean on the element every day.
Space, drain and power
Allentown's homes are mostly older: 82.1% were built before 1980. Water heaters in these homes usually sit in a basement, which tends to suit a heat pump model. Before you buy, check:
- Enough open space around the unit for air flow. Read the maker's minimum room size.
- A floor drain or a spot for a small condensate pump.
