What battery incentives exist in Brookhaven
We re-read NYSERDA's battery pages on October 3, 2026. Brookhaven is a PSEG Long Island area, so the Long Island rules apply, not the rules for the rest of the state. Each card links to its source at the bottom of the page.
NYSERDA Long Island storage incentive
Only for a battery paired with grid-connected home solar. Your NY-Sun contractor applies for you, and it covers the battery part only. NYSERDA does not publish a flat dollar figure on this page.
Extra for lower incomes
Households earning under 80% of the area median income can get more. Your contractor helps check this.
LIPA Dynamic Load Management
Your battery can earn money by covering your home's demand on the few days a year when the grid is busiest.
Federal battery tax credit
The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit does not apply to batteries placed in service after December 31, 2025.
The one rule to remember
Outside Long Island, NYSERDA pays for stand-alone batteries of 25 kWh or less. In Brookhaven it does not. If you have no solar and do not plan to add it, there is no state battery incentive for you right now. If you already have solar, adding a battery to it does count.
Why outages matter in Brookhaven
Brookhaven is a town of single houses. The US Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) counts about 179,400 homes in the town, and 78% of them are single detached houses. About 81% of households own their home. That is the kind of place where a battery is practical: you own the wall it hangs on, and you decide what it powers.
Heat is the bigger worry. The same survey shows 52% of Brookhaven homes heat with fuel oil, 33% with piped gas, and only 10% with electricity. An oil boiler or furnace still needs electricity to run its burner, pump and controls. When the power goes out in January, the oil tank can be full and the house still goes cold. A battery sized to run the boiler, the fridge, a few lights and the Wi-Fi is the most common reason Brookhaven families ask us about storage.
How the Long Island incentive works, step by step
NYSERDA says the incentive is for residential solar that is connected to the grid and paired with a battery. It can be a brand new solar plus battery system, or a battery added to solar you already own. You must hire a participating NY-Sun contractor. The contractor applies for the incentive for you, and it only covers the battery part of the job.
NYSERDA does not list a set dollar amount on its Long Island page, and the rate changes over time. So the right move is to ask every contractor to write the incentive amount on the quote, as a separate line. If two quotes show different incentive amounts for the same size battery, ask why.
Getting paid to share your battery
LIPA, the public power authority that PSEG Long Island runs the grid for, has a Dynamic Load Management program. On the few peak days each year, your battery covers your house so you draw less from the grid, and you get paid for it. NYSERDA notes that your home keeps running as normal during these events. Ask your contractor if your battery brand works with the program, and how much charge it keeps back for an outage.
When a battery does not make sense
We want to be honest. A battery is expensive, and with the federal tax credit gone, the full cost now falls on you, minus the NYSERDA incentive. If your main goal is to keep an oil boiler running for a day or two, a smaller battery or a properly installed transfer switch with a generator may cost less. If your roof is shaded or due for replacement, fix that first, because the battery incentive here depends on solar. If you plan to switch to a heat pump, size the battery after you know the new heating load, since a heat pump draws far more power than a boiler.
Thinking about solar first? Our PSEG Long Island rebates page covers the other Long Island offers, and our Brookhaven heat pump guide explains the heat pump money that is often bigger than any battery incentive.
Questions to ask a battery installer
Ask how many kilowatt-hours the battery stores and which circuits it will back up. Ask whether your oil burner, well pump (if you have one) and sump pump are on the backed-up panel. Ask for the NYSERDA incentive as a line on the quote, and whether they handle the LIPA program enrollment. Ask how long the warranty lasts and what share of capacity it promises at the end. And ask whether they are a NY-Sun participating contractor, because without that there is no incentive at all.
How to claim the battery incentive in Brookhaven
- Confirm you have, or will add, grid-connected solar. Without it, the Long Island incentive does not apply.
- Get two or three quotes from participating NY-Sun contractors, with the battery incentive shown as its own line.
- If your household income may be under 80% of the area median, ask the contractor to check the higher incentive before you sign.
- Your contractor applies to NYSERDA and takes the incentive off your price.
- After install, ask about enrolling in LIPA's Dynamic Load Management program for peak payments.
Common questions
Can I get a battery rebate in Brookhaven without solar?
No. NYSERDA's page for Long Island residents says storage incentives are for grid-connected residential solar paired with a battery. Stand-alone battery incentives exist elsewhere in New York, but not on Long Island at this time.
Can I add a battery to solar I already have?
Yes. NYSERDA says the project can be an existing solar system retrofitted with a new battery. A participating NY-Sun contractor must do the install and apply.
Is there still a federal tax credit for home batteries?
No. The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS.
How much is the Long Island battery incentive?
NYSERDA does not publish a flat figure on its Long Island page, and rates change over time. Ask each contractor to show the exact incentive on your quote.
Will a battery keep my oil heat running in an outage?
It can, if the boiler or furnace circuit is on the backed-up panel. Most oil systems need only a small amount of power, so ask the installer to include that circuit.
What to do next
Start with your roof and your heat. If solar works on your roof, ask NY-Sun contractors to quote solar with a battery and show the incentive. If you heat with oil and want to move off it, read our Brookhaven rebate hub first, because heat pump rebates may change what size battery you need.
