What battery incentives exist in Newburgh
We re-read NYSERDA's home energy storage pages on October 3, 2026. NYSERDA posts the current rate per kWh on a regional dashboard, not on its program page, so ask contractors for today's figure in writing.

A bigger rebate may be waiting
Central Hudson's NYS Clean Heat heat pump rebate is up to $7,000 for a single-family home over 1,000 square feet that removes its old system, or $12,000 in the Weatherized Tier. Central Hudson projects can be covered up to 85% of cost, higher than the 70% cap in most of the state. For most Newburgh homeowners, that is a better first dollar than a battery.
What Newburgh homes look like
The US Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) counts about 11,800 homes in the City of Newburgh. Only 28% are single detached houses, while 43% are in buildings of 2 to 4 units. About 35% of households own their home, and 65% rent. 51% of homes were built in 1939 or earlier.
That shapes who can use a battery. NYSERDA's incentive is for a permanent battery, which the property owner must install. Owners of detached houses and owner-occupied two- to four-family homes are the main fit. Renters cannot install one themselves.
Heating and outages
The same Census survey shows 58% of Newburgh homes heat with piped gas, 30% with electricity and 10% with fuel oil. That 30% electric share is high, about three times Buffalo's. An electric-heated home is the hardest to keep warm in an outage, because a typical battery cannot run baseboard heaters for long. A gas or oil boiler, on the other hand, needs only a little power for its controls and pump, which a battery can cover.
So if you heat with electricity and outages are your fear, a battery alone may disappoint. Ask the installer how many hours it can run your heat, not just your lights.
When a battery makes sense here
It can make sense if someone in your home relies on medical equipment, if you work from home, or if you already plan solar. It makes less sense as a money saver, now that the federal 30% credit is gone. If you own a multi-family house, ask whether the battery can back up shared needs like the boiler and hallway lights.
Income help
Orange County is on NYSERDA's downstate list for EmPower+, which helps income-eligible homes with efficiency work, panel upgrades and wiring. EmPower+ does not list batteries, but a panel upgrade done through it can make a later battery or heat pump easier. NYSERDA also pays a higher battery rate to income-eligible homes.
How to get the battery incentive in Newburgh
- Find a NYSERDA participating energy storage contractor.
- Choose a battery of 25 kWh or less. Ask which circuits it will back up, and for how long.
- Ask the contractor to show the NYSERDA incentive as its own line on the quote, and whether the higher rate applies to you.
- The contractor applies to NYSERDA. The incentive comes off your price.

Does Central Hudson have a home battery rebate?
Not that we found. Newburgh homes use NYSERDA's statewide Residential Energy Storage Program instead.
Do I need solar to get the battery incentive in Newburgh?
No. Outside Long Island, NYSERDA's program does not require solar.
