Why this rebate is unusual
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) says 21.0% of Lansing homes heat with electricity and 74.6% with utility gas. A heat pump water heater runs on electricity, so it works in a gas home too, and BWL's rebate is for BWL electric customers whatever heats the house. If your electric water heater is old, this is one of the better electric-side rebates in Michigan.
Rules on the form
BWL asks for a copy of the equipment invoice showing the date of installation and a specification sheet that shows the efficiency rating. The unit must be ENERGY STAR certified. BWL suggests applying within 90 days and does not accept applications after December 31, 2026. Funds are limited.
What a heat pump water heater needs
These units pull heat from the air around them, so they need room to breathe and a place for condensate to drain. They also run quietly but cool the space they sit in. A basement or a utility room is usually a good spot. Ask your installer about clearance and drain needs before you buy.
Size it for your household
A heat pump water heater comes in several tank sizes. Pick one by the number of people in the home and how many showers and loads of laundry run in a day. A tank that is too small runs its backup heating element, which uses more power. Ask your installer what mode the unit will run in during the winter, and whether the room stays warm enough for the unit to work well.
Pair it with other electric rebates
BWL's electrification page also lists a $300 rebate for a heat pump clothes dryer and a $300 rebate for an induction cooktop, with one rebate per residential account for each item. If you are replacing several gas appliances with electric ones, plan the purchases together and keep each receipt in a separate folder.
If you heat water with gas
Consumers Energy lists instant rebates on ENERGY STAR gas storage and tankless water heaters for its gas customers, but its page shows no amount. If you do not switch to electric, ask your contractor for the Consumers amount in writing.

- Pick an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater.
- Ask BWL which amount applies, $500 or $1,000, and save the reply.
- Install it, and keep the invoice with the install date and the specification sheet.
- Fill in the BWL residential application.
- Submit by email, fax or mail before December 31, 2026.
