ComEd: up to $2,000 off

Heat Pump Rebates in Chicago

If you live in Chicago, two utilities matter for a heat pump. ComEd is your electric company and takes money off a heat pump that your installer puts in. Peoples Gas is your gas company and pays a smaller rebate for a gas-powered heat pump. The federal tax credit ended after 2025, so these utility offers are the main help. Here is what each pays, and which one fits your home.

Chicago homes in numbers

The Census Bureau's survey for 2020 to 2024 counts 1,277,054 homes in Chicago. Only 25.6% are detached houses. Another 27.4% are in buildings of two to four homes, which is where two-flats and three-flats sit. Renters are 54.0% of households and owners 46.0%. That mix shapes which rebate you can use. An owner of a two-flat can usually decide to add a heat pump. A tenant has to ask the owner.

Gas heats most Chicago homes

Utility gas heats 77.5% of Chicago homes. Electricity heats 18.0%, bottled gas 1.7% and fuel oil 0.1%. For the large gas group, a heat pump replaces a furnace or boiler, and ComEd's discount is the one to use. For the 18.0% already on electric heat, a heat pump is often the biggest saving. Ask your installer to compare your last year of ComEd bills with what a heat pump would use.

Peoples Gas pays $200 or $225 if you instead replace your gas furnace with a new, more efficient gas furnace. That is a different choice from a heat pump, and you cannot take both for the same job.

Picking a ComEd tier

ComEd measures size by the heat the unit can make, in tons. Divide the unit's heating output in Btu per hour by 12,000. A unit that makes 30,000 Btu per hour is 2.5 tons. For a ducted unit under 2.5 tons, ComEd's basic tier pays up to $900 and the higher-efficiency tier up to $1,500. At 2.5 tons or more the amounts rise to $1,400 and $2,000. The higher tier needs 17 SEER2 and 8.5 HSPF2. SEER2 is the cooling score and HSPF2 is the heating score. Ask for both in writing before you sign.

Apartments, condos and renters

Most Chicago households rent. ComEd's heat pump discount goes to the person who pays for the work, so a tenant needs the owner to agree. ComEd's free Home Energy Savings program is open to renters in single-family homes, two-flats, condos, mobile homes and townhomes, with the landlord's permission, if the household income is at or below 80% of the area median. A building of three or more units uses ComEd's separate multi-family offers, which we did not read.

Check your electric panel and ducts

Before you sign, ask the installer to check three things: whether your electric panel has room for a new heat pump, whether your ducts are in good shape and sealed, and whether you will keep your old furnace as a backup. A good quote lists each. Panel upgrades are not covered by ComEd's discount on the pages we read.

How to get a heat pump rebate in Chicago

  1. Check that your electric bill comes from ComEd.
  2. Get two or three quotes from ComEd heat pump-trained contractors and ask which tier each unit earns.
  3. Ask for the discount as its own line on the invoice.
  4. If you own a two-flat or larger building, ask ComEd about its multi-family offers first.
  5. If your household income is under the limit, call 855-433-2700 to ask about free help before you spend.

Common questions

How much will ComEd take off a heat pump in Chicago?

Up to $900 to $2,000 for a ducted unit and up to $500 to $1,000 for a mini-split, depending on size and efficiency. The amount comes off your installer's invoice.

Can I get both a ComEd and a Peoples Gas rebate?

Peoples Gas's heat pump rebate is for a gas-fired heat pump, and ComEd's is for an electric one. They are different machines, so you would not buy both for the same job.

Is the federal tax credit still available?

No. The federal credits for heat pumps ended for spending after December 31, 2025.

Do I need to apply to ComEd?

Not for the heat pump discount. Your ComEd heat pump-trained contractor applies it to the invoice.

I rent in Chicago. Can I get a rebate?

Only through your landlord for the heat pump itself. Renters can still claim ComEd appliance and thermostat rebates on their own account.

Read the full list of ComEd rebates, the Chicago heat pump water heater guide, or the Chicago insulation guide, since sealing the house first can let you buy a smaller heat pump.
