Up to $4,000 per upgrade

SMUD Rebates for Homeowners

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District pays some of the largest utility rebates in California for heat pumps, water heaters and electrical upgrades. The amounts changed in 2026, and some older figures online are out of date. These come from SMUD's own pages, read on October 2, 2026.

What SMUD pays in 2026

SMUD's rebates depend on funding and some change by date, so treat each amount as current on the day we read it and confirm before you buy. Each card names the fact it comes from, with the date and a link to SMUD's page.

Who SMUD serves

SMUD supplies electricity in Sacramento and nearby communities, including Rancho Cordova and Folsom. Check the name on your electric bill. SMUD does not supply gas, so most of its heat pump money is aimed at homes that switch from gas. The amounts are higher for a switch from gas than an upgrade from electric heat, which is why the same equipment can pay $3,000 in one home and $1,000 in another.

Using a contractor from SMUD's network

SMUD pays the heat pump, water heater and insulation rebates through contractors in its network. A contractor who is not in the network cannot file the rebate for you. Ask for proof they are listed before you sign. The EV charger rebate has its own application, wants the vehicle registered at your SMUD address in your name, and allows one Charge@Home rebate per account for life.

What SMUD does not pay

We did not find a SMUD cash rebate for rooftop solar, and an earlier figure of $2,000 could not be confirmed on SMUD's pages. Battery money exists, but only through SMUD's Solar and Storage Rate and its enrollment program. A $5,400 battery rebate that appears on some sites is not on SMUD's page. State programs such as TECH Clean California and the federal home electrification rebates are reserved or paused in 2026, so don't count on them to add to SMUD.

What it costs before rebates

SMUD publishes median installed prices from its own customers: $18,804 for a gas-to-electric heat pump and $6,220 for a gas-to-electric heat pump water heater, before rebates. A $3,000 heat pump rebate on an $18,804 job is about 16% of the cost, so the rebate matters most when you also use the Go Electric panel money.

How to claim a SMUD rebate

  1. Confirm your electricity is from SMUD, not PG&E.
  2. Choose a contractor from the SMUD Contractor Network for heat pump, water heater or insulation work.
  3. Ask the contractor to confirm the current rebate amount for your exact equipment before you sign.
  4. Let the contractor file the rebate. For an EV charger, apply through SMUD's Charge@Home page.
  5. Keep every invoice and permit. Battery customers must enroll within 90 days of permission to operate.
