Bundle attic insulation for a bigger rebate
The same attic work pays more in the assessment-required tier ($1,500) than the no-assessment tier ($1,250), worth planning for if you're already doing a two-or-more-measure retrofit and qualify for the $500 three-measure bonus mentioned on the main Timmins page.
How to claim it
- For attic-only: get a contractor quote confirming your starting R-value
- For the bigger tier: book a home energy assessment (~$600, refunded as a rebate)

Common questions
How much is the attic insulation rebate in Timmins?
Up to $1,250 if you're starting from R-12 or below, $1,000 from R-12 to R-25, or $800 from R-25 to R-35, no home energy assessment required for this tier.
Can I get more than $1,250 for attic insulation in Timmins?
Yes. If you bundle attic insulation into the assessment-required tier instead of claiming it standalone, it pays up to $1,500 (and cathedral ceiling/flat roof pays up to $780 instead of $750). That tier requires a home energy assessment, roughly $600, refunded as a rebate.
What other insulation areas are covered in Timmins?
The assessment-required tier also covers exterior wall insulation (up to $3,600, to at least R-20), foundation/basement wall (up to $1,500), basement slab (up to $500), foundation header (up to $300), crawlspace wall and ceiling (up to $1,200 each, $2,400 combined), and exposed floor ($300).
Why does insulation matter more in Timmins than in southern Ontario?
Timmins sits over 700 km north of Toronto with a meaningfully colder winter and an older housing stock from the city's mining-boom decades. That combination raises the practical value of insulation and air-sealing work here, the rebate amounts are identical to the rest of the province, but the return on doing the work is higher given the local climate and housing age.
Hydro One serves Timmins, and hundreds of other small towns like it
Unlike the single-city utilities in southern Ontario, Hydro One is a province-wide distributor that covers most of rural and northern Ontario, Timmins included. That scale doesn't affect the rebate math on this page, the numbers are set by the province, not the utility, but it does mean the person you'd reach about a service-capacity question isn't a small local office; it's a much bigger call centre serving a huge territory. Insulation work rarely triggers that call anyway, since you're sealing the building envelope, not adding electrical load. We haven't found a Hydro One insulation incentive layered on top of the provincial rebate, but it's worth confirming directly since programs change.
A -39.3°C night changes the payback math
Insulation rebates exist because heat loss costs real money, and that cost scales with how far the outside temperature drops below your thermostat. Over 2015-2024, Timmins averaged a January low of -18.6°C with a record night of -39.3°C, among the coldest in this data set. A furnace fighting that kind of gap through an under-insulated attic or wall is burning noticeably more fuel than the same house with the work done, which is why sealing up the envelope tends to pay back faster in Timmins than in a city with a milder winter, even though the rebate amount itself is identical province-wide.
