$100/opening

Per rough opening replaced with an eligible ENERGY STAR window or door.

This rebate lives in the assessment-required tier, so it needs a home energy assessment (about $600, refunded as a rebate) plus at least two qualifying upgrades total — pair it with insulation, a heat pump water heater, or another measure from that tier to unlock it, and hit three or more upgrades for an extra $500 bonus.

Common questions

How much is the windows and doors rebate in Thunder Bay?

Yes — an assessment (about $600, refunded) and at least two qualifying upgrades total.

Your utility: Synergy North

Thunder Bay's old city-owned utility, Thunder Bay Hydro, hasn't existed under that name since 2019, when it merged with Kenora Hydro to form Synergy North. If your bill still says "Thunder Bay Hydro" in your memory, look for Synergy North instead. The province-wide windows and doors rebate doesn't change based on that merger, but Synergy North is who to contact about panel capacity or a new service connection if your renovation needs one.

What Thunder Bay's winters mean for this upgrade's payback

Thunder Bay's climate is shaped by Lake Superior on one side and genuine northern Ontario cold on the other, producing winters that are both long and severe — the 10-year average January daily low (2015-2024) is -14.2°C, with a coldest recorded day of -31.9°C, among the coldest of any city this program serves in the south-of-the-far-north band of the province. At that temperature range, an old window's air leakage is a direct, measurable hit to a heating bill every month from November through March.
