Heat pump clothes dryer
ENERGY STAR heat pump dryer, instant rebate at participating retailers. These dryers are vent-free and use gentle, low-temperature drying.
Heat pump water heater
Instant in-store at checkout. The same $800 can come through an assessment if you did not take it at the till, but not both.
Smart thermostat for electric heat
At participating retailers, or online at getmysa.com. Only for thermostats made for electric heating.
Variable-speed pool pump
ENERGY STAR certified, instant in-store rebate.
Clothesline kit or outside dryer
Five dollars off at participating retailers. Small, but the cheapest way to cut a dryer bill.
Free smart thermostat
Electrically heated homes on a residential rate can have one installed at no cost, with other free devices possible.
Refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, washers and air conditioners are not on the list, so a store sign that promises a Nova Scotia rebate on one of them is not an Efficiency Nova Scotia offer.
The dryer is the one to watch
A heat pump dryer does not vent hot air outdoors. It dries clothes at a lower temperature using a heat pump, which is why Efficiency Nova Scotia describes it as saving money on energy bills and gentle on clothes. Nova Scotia Power charges 19.128 cents per kWh plus a $20.08 monthly base charge since May 1, 2026, so every kilowatt hour a dryer saves is worth about 19 cents to you. The $150 off the price does not change what the unit costs to run, so compare the model's rated energy use and the price before you buy.
Read the eligible model list first
Each instant rebate has an eligible model list on the Efficiency Nova Scotia page. The rebate only comes off when the model is on the list and the store is a participating retailer, so check both before you go. The page also has a map to find participating stores. If a store has never heard of the rebate, ask at the desk before you pay, because the discount is applied at checkout, not mailed to you afterwards.
Water heaters pay the most
The biggest appliance-type rebate is $800 on an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater. Take it at the till and you cannot also claim the same $800 through an assessment. See our Halifax water heater page or the Cape Breton one for the rules on picking a model.
What changed this year
The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant ended, with its last day for documents on December 31, 2025. Its loan cannot approve new applications. Efficiency Nova Scotia's Home Heating System Rebates also closed on December 31, 2025. What remains for appliances is the instant list above.
If you rent
Instant rebates are at the till, so renters can use them on an appliance they buy. The free thermostat visit needs the landlord's written permission, and the $400 provincial heating rebate is open to renters who pay their own heat. Electricity use under 5,000 kWh a year does not count as an eligible heating cost for that rebate, and heat included in your rent does not count either.

- Use the retailer map to find a participating store.
- Ask for the instant rebate at checkout and check it shows on your receipt.
- Keep the receipt in case a question comes up later.
