Michigan Smart Thermostat Rebates in 2026

A smart thermostat is the easiest rebate in Michigan to claim. DTE Energy pays $50, the Lansing Board of Water & Light pays $50, and Consumers Energy lists $50 to $100, though two of its documents disagree. We read each one on October 6, 2026. The amounts are small, but so is the work.

What smart thermostat rebates pay in Michigan in 2026

Pick the right program

Look at your bills first. A DTE customer uses DTE's page. A Lansing home with BWL electricity uses BWL's form. A Consumers customer uses Consumers' chart. If a home has two companies, such as BWL for electric and Consumers for gas, you may be able to claim one of each, but each program says one per account or per system. Ask before you stack them.

What the paperwork needs

DTE asks for a receipt that shows the date, the model number, the maker and the store. If a thermostat came in a bundle, it must show as its own line with its own price. BWL asks for a receipt too, and says the thermostat must control a central air or electric heat system. Consumers' chart says its thermostat must replace a non-programmable one.

Will a thermostat save money?

It can, if you use the schedule and away settings. A thermostat that is left on a fixed temperature saves little. Pick one that works with your furnace or heat pump, because some do not work with electric baseboard heat. Check your system type on the product page before you buy.

Common mistakes

Buying a thermostat before you read the rules is the most common one. A refurbished unit does not qualify for DTE. A bundle needs its own line on the receipt. Waiting too long also costs people, since DTE's six month window runs from the purchase date and all three programs stop in December 2026. Take a photo of the box and the receipt on the day you buy.

Free is better than $50

Consumers' free home energy analysis gives smart thermostats at no cost during the visit, and DTE's Energy Efficiency Assistance covers lower-income households. If one of those fits you, skip the purchase.

How to claim a smart thermostat rebate in Michigan

  1. Find your utility on your bill.
  2. Check that the model is on your utility's eligible list or meets its rules.
  3. Buy it and keep a receipt with the model number and date.
  4. Apply online or by form within the time limit.
  5. Expect a check in a few weeks. DTE says four to six weeks online.
