The math

One thermostat bought in Pasadena earns $50 + $10 = $60. A customer on Bill Payment Assistance can add $50 per unit, and with two thermostats that comes to as much as $220 over five years if everything stacks. PWP does not spell out the stacking, so ask before you count on it.

How Pasadena compares nearby

Burbank pays up to $75 for a smart thermostat (Burbank thermostat rebates). Southern California Edison customers can get a $75 bill credit for enrolling a thermostat in demand response, which is a different kind of offer. Glendale's current rebate list has no thermostat rebate at all. So Pasadena's $50 sits in the middle, and it is paid as a check after you buy, not as a credit for joining a program.

Your utility: Pasadena Water and Power

PWP pays this one, and only for PWP electric customers. Pasadena gas customers can also look at the Southern California Gas Company, which PWP's page names as a source of additional rebates. Gas company offers change often, so check its rebate page the week you buy. We did not read the SoCalGas page and cannot quote an amount.

Check that it works with your system

A smart thermostat only helps if it fits your heating and cooling equipment. Heat pumps, multi-stage systems and old wall furnaces each have different needs. Check that the model supports your system type, and check whether your system already has a common wire (a C-wire) at the thermostat. Take a photo of the old wiring before you remove anything, because PWP also wants a photo of the finished install for the rebate.

Pasadena winters are mild, with an average January low of 7.5°C (about 45°F) over 2015 to 2024, so a heating schedule saves less here than in a cold city. Make sure the model you buy handles cooling well, and use its schedule for the hours the house is empty.

Keep the paperwork tidy

PWP asks for your complete sales receipt or paid invoice showing the product and model number, the date purchased and installed or delivered, and a proof-of-install photo. Rebates are for new products only, not refurbished ones. Apply within 180 days of the purchase date, and keep the order confirmation if you bought online.

Installers in Pasadena

A thermostat is a do-it-yourself job for some homes and an installer job for others, especially with a heat pump or a multi-stage system. These Pasadena-area HVAC companies have the best Google ratings, listed by rating and then review count. We are not paid to list anyone.
