Up to 5 free, about $350

BC Hydro Free Smart Thermostats (Fall 2026)

BC Hydro is giving homes with electric baseboard heat up to five free smart thermostats from Mysa or Sinopé. They ship free and come already signed up for Peak Saver, which pays you $50 each winter, or $100 if your income qualifies. Here is who can get them, when, and whether it's worth it, read from BC Hydro and the Province.

The offer at a glance

We read BC Hydro's product page and the Province's July 6, 2026 news release on October 3, 2026. On that date BC Hydro still listed the thermostats as coming this fall, with more details to come. We will update this page the day ordering opens.

Who can get free thermostats

The offer is for BC Hydro residential customers whose homes are heated by electric baseboards. Mysa and Sinopé baseboard thermostats are line-voltage thermostats. They switch the 120V or 240V power that runs a baseboard heater.

The Province says the program is meant to reach condos and apartments too. Renters and condo owners with baseboards have had few ways to join Peak Saver before. About 800,000 BC homes, more than 40%, heat with electricity.

It is not for a furnace or a ducted heat pump. Ecobee, Nest and other 24V thermostats can't run baseboards, and BC Hydro doesn't give them away. It is also not for FortisBC electric customers in places like Kelowna and Penticton. FortisBC has its own connected-thermostat rebate for electric central heat.

When you can order

BC Hydro opened an email sign-up on July 6, 2026 and said ordering would start in October 2026. On October 3 its page still said "coming this fall" and that more details are coming soon. The safest move now is to join the email list on BC Hydro's Peak Saver page so you hear the day it opens.

When it opens, you order from Mysa or Sinopé directly, not from a store. You pick the brand. You install them yourself or hire an electrician. Line-voltage wiring carries full house voltage, so if you are not sure, hire an electrician.

Mysa or Sinopé: which to pick

Both are Canadian and both make baseboard models that work with Peak Saver. Mysa is the better-known app, with Apple Home, Alexa and Google support, and a minimal look. Sinopé says its newest and most advanced baseboard thermostat is the one in this program. Check the amperage (load) of each heater against the model before you order. A large baseboard on one thermostat can exceed what a model handles.

For a deeper side-by-side, see our Mysa vs Ecobee vs Nest comparison, which also covers which thermostat fits which kind of heat.

Is it worth it?

For a baseboard home, yes. The thermostats are free, they let you heat only the rooms you use, and BC Hydro pays you $50 each winter to let it trim your heat during a few peak events.

The catch is control. During a peak event your heat drops a degree or two for a short time. You can override any event. But BC Hydro's Peak Saver rules say you need to take part in at least half the events in a season to get that season's reward.

Other BC Hydro offers this winter

BC Hydro also brought back appliance rebates on October 2, 2026: up to $200 on ENERGY STAR washers, dryers, fridges and laundry centres until January 8, 2027, and $25 on air fryers. If you are ready to replace baseboards entirely, a heat pump that replaces electric heat gets up to $4,000. See every BC Hydro rebate in one table and Peak Saver, explained.

How to get your free thermostats

  1. Check your bill: you need a BC Hydro residential account and electric baseboard heat.
  2. Count your baseboard zones. You can get up to five thermostats per home, so pick the rooms you use most.
  3. Sign up for BC Hydro's notification email on its Peak Saver page so you hear the day ordering opens.
  4. When it opens, order from Mysa or Sinopé's site using the BC Hydro offer. Shipping is free.
  5. Install them (or hire an electrician), connect them to Wi-Fi, and they are already enrolled in Peak Saver.

Guides

Common questions

Is the BC Hydro free thermostat available now?

Not yet, as of October 3, 2026. BC Hydro said ordering would start in October 2026, and its page says the offer is coming this fall with more details soon. You can sign up to be told when it opens.

How many free thermostats can I get from BC Hydro?

Up to five per home, from Mysa or Sinopé. The Province values them at about $350 per home.

Can I get a free Ecobee or Nest from BC Hydro?

No. The free thermostats are line-voltage models for electric baseboards. Ecobee and Nest are for furnaces and ducted heat pumps, and BC Hydro does not rebate them.

How much does Peak Saver pay for a thermostat?

Free thermostats earn $50 each winter, or $100 for income-qualified customers. If you enroll a baseboard thermostat you already own, Peak Saver pays $100 once plus $50 each winter.

Do I have to let BC Hydro control my heat?

A few times a winter BC Hydro may lower your heat by a degree or two for a short time. You can override any event, but you need to take part in at least half of them to earn the season's reward.
