Insulation, explained

Insulation keeps heat in during winter and out during summer. It is often the best first upgrade. Here is what pays today.

Quick quiz

Quick quiz: how insulation works

Ten questions on the technology. Tap an answer to see why.

1. What does an R-value measure?

A higher R-value slows heat loss more.

2. In many older homes, where is a good place to start?

Warm air rises and escapes through the top of the house, and attics are often the easiest place to add insulation.

3. What does air sealing do?

Moving air carries heat. Sealing gaps before adding insulation makes the insulation work better.

4. What is a blower door test?

The fan pulls air out, and gauges show how fast outside air leaks in.

5. Which type of insulation is blown into an attic as loose fill?

Loose fill spreads over uneven spaces and around pipes and wires.

6. Before adding insulation, what should you fix first?

Wet insulation stops working and can grow mould.

7. After you air seal a home tightly, it also needs:

A tighter home holds moisture and stale air unless fresh air comes in on purpose, often through a ventilator.

8. Does adding insulation help in summer?

Insulation slows heat in both directions.

9. What can a home energy assessment tell you?

It ranks the fixes so your first dollar goes furthest.

10. Which is a common leak in an attic floor?

Small holes where things pass through the ceiling let warm air into the attic.

Insulation slows heat as it moves through your attic, walls and floors. A home that holds its heat can use a smaller heating system, and rooms feel steadier.

Many programs pay for insulation, and some tie it to a home energy assessment. That can mean an assessment before the work and another after. Others pay for an attic upgrade without one. The rules, and the starting insulation level they accept, are different in each place, so read the program page first.

What to check before you buy

  • Do you need an assessment? Some programs need one before and after the work. Book it before any work starts.
  • Which parts of the house. Attics, walls, basements and crawl spaces often have different amounts.
  • Your starting level. Some programs pay only when the existing insulation is below a set level.
  • The contractor. Many programs need a participating or registered company.
  • The paperwork. Keep invoices and photos. Some programs ask for both.
