What Red Deer homes can get
We re-read the City of Red Deer's rebate and energy efficiency pages on October 3, 2026. Both are linked at the bottom.
City of Red Deer Smart Thermostat Rebate
For a new smart thermostat from the qualifying list, bought in 2026 and installed in Red Deer. One rebate per City utility account. Applications close when the funds run out.
Free thermal camera and toolkit loans
The City says you can borrow a thermal imaging camera and an Energy & Water Conservation Toolkit from the Red Deer Public Library.
Clean Energy Improvement Program
Red Deer is not on Alberta Municipalities' list of residential CEIP locations, so there is no tax-bill financing here.
Check your wiring first
The City warns that most smart thermostats need a C wire (common wire) to give them steady power. Before you buy, take the cover off your old thermostat and look for a wire on the terminal marked C. If there isn't one, ask the store or an electrician which models will work, or whether an adapter is an option.
Who qualifies
The City lists these rules. You must:
- live in Red Deer and have a City of Red Deer utility account;
- buy a new smart thermostat from the qualifying list in 2026 and install it at a Red Deer property;
- not have used this program before;
- not be using another funding program for it, such as the federal Greener Homes Grant and Loan (which has now ended anyway);
- send a copy of your receipt showing the store, product, price and date.
It is one rebate per utility account, so a household gets one $50 payment even if it installs two thermostats.
What counts as a qualifying thermostat
The City's qualifying list links to the ENERGY STAR finder for certified connected thermostats sold in Canada. If a model is on that list, it should qualify. Check before you buy, and keep the receipt.
The City says space heating and cooling make up almost two-thirds of home energy use, and that a smart thermostat can lower energy use by 8% to 12%. Your own savings depend on your home and how you set your schedule.
Red Deer homes, by the numbers
The 2021 Census counted 40,515 households in Red Deer. About 53% live in single-detached houses and 65% own their home. About 34% of households live in homes built before 1981, and another 28% in homes built from 1981 to 2000.
Renters can apply only if they hold a City utility account, and should ask the landlord before changing a thermostat. Red Deer's average January low over the last ten years was about -14.3°C, and the coldest reading was -42.4°C. A smart thermostat won't make an old house warmer, but a schedule that lowers the heat while you sleep or are at work is an easy saving.
Make the most of it: borrow before you buy
A thermostat is a small step. To see where your home actually loses heat, borrow the free thermal camera from the Red Deer Public Library. It shows cold spots around windows, doors and attic hatches. The library's Energy & Water Conservation Toolkit helps you find which appliances and devices use the most power.
Since Red Deer has no CEIP financing and Alberta has no provincial rebates in 2026, these free tools are the cheapest way to plan bigger upgrades.
