The Three Types, Straight Up
Standard Tank (Gas or Electric)
Cost installed: $1,200-$2,000. Lifespan: 8-12 years. Rebate: None from CleanBC/BC Hydro — this is the type the rebate program is trying to move you away from.
Cheapest upfront, but the highest lifetime operating cost of the three. Makes sense only if your current unit just failed and you need hot water back today — swap it later when you can plan the upgrade properly.
Tankless (On-Demand)
Cost installed: $2,500-$4,000 (often more if your home needs a gas line or electrical panel upgrade). Lifespan: 15-20 years. Rebate: Not eligible for the CleanBC/BC Hydro heat pump rebate; a smaller FortisBC rebate may apply to high-efficiency gas models depending on your utility territory.
Never runs out of hot water and takes up almost no space — good for smaller homes or if you're reclaiming a utility closet. Downside: installation cost is unpredictable until a plumber sees your existing gas/electrical setup, and BC's incoming water is cold enough in winter that flow rate can drop noticeably at the tap.
Heat Pump (Hybrid)
Cost installed: $2,500-$4,500 before rebate. Lifespan: 10-15 years. Rebate: $1,000-$3,000 through BC Hydro and CleanBC, with an additional up to $500 combined for a pre/post assessment.
Pulls heat from surrounding air instead of generating it directly, so it uses roughly a third of the electricity of a standard electric tank. This is the type the rebate program actually targets — after the rebate, it often lands close to tankless pricing while cutting your ongoing electric bill.

Sizing It Right
Get this wrong and you'll either run out of hot water or pay for capacity you never use.
Tank sizing (by household size)
- 1-2 people: 30-40 gallons
- 3-4 people: 40-50 gallons
- 5+ people, or a soaker tub: 60-80 gallons
Tankless sizing (by flow rate, not capacity)
Tankless units are rated in gallons per minute (GPM), not storage size. Add up your busiest simultaneous fixtures — shower (2-2.5 GPM) + kitchen tap (1.5 GPM) + dishwasher (1-2 GPM) — and size to that peak, not your average use. Undersizing is the single most common tankless complaint: hot water that "runs out" is actually a unit that can't keep up with two showers running at once.
Who Qualifies for the BC Rebate
- You own your home in BC
- You're replacing an existing gas or electric tank with a heat pump water heater
- An HPCN-certified installer files the rebate claim on your behalf
- Income-qualified households can see higher rebate amounts
The rebate amount is consistent across BC — Vancouver, Burnaby, Kelowna, and every other BC city page shows the same $1,000-$3,000 range, since it's a provincial CleanBC/BC Hydro program rather than a municipal one.
What to Ask Before You Sign
- "Is this unit on the CleanBC/BC Hydro qualifying list?" (Not every heat pump water heater qualifies — confirm before you buy, not after.)
- "Will you file the rebate claim, or do I need to?"
- "What's the actual installed cost after rebate, not before?"
- "Do I need an electrical panel upgrade for this unit?" (Heat pump water heaters draw more amperage than a standard tank.)
- "Where will you vent it?" (Heat pump water heaters exhaust cool air — a small utility closet can get uncomfortably cold.)
The One Number That Matters
A heat pump water heater in a typical BC home saves roughly $150-$250/year in electricity versus a standard electric tank. Combined with the $1,000-$3,000 rebate, payback on the price difference is usually 4-7 years — and the unit still has years of life left after that.
