Why Your Neighbour's Powerwall Got No BC Rebate

By Sam Menard · Updated September 26, 2026

Short answer: As of March 12, 2025, all Tesla products (Powerwall 2 and 3, Tesla chargers and inverters) are not eligible for BC Hydro or CleanBC rebates. The only exception is a project that applied for self-generation before that date. An approved battery with Peak Saver can get up to $5,000.

How it happens

Powerwall is the best-known home battery, so many people ask for it by name. In BC, choosing any Tesla battery means no BC Hydro rebate. Some quotes still don't mention this.

How to avoid it

  1. Check the battery model against BC Hydro's qualified product list.
  2. Confirm your contractor is an HPCN member.
  3. Get your self-generation application accepted before install.
  4. Enroll in Peak Saver within 14 days of in-service for the $5,000 cap.

What to do next

  1. Check who your electric utility is.
  2. Check whether your income qualifies for CleanBC.
  3. Get quotes from qualified contractors and apply on time.
