Short answer: You can apply from October 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027. The province says the $400 should take 8 to 10 weeks. To check your status, go to the province's status page and enter your confirmation number and postal code. It only works if you applied online.

Payment dates for 2026-27

The province does not publish a payment calendar. Your date depends on when you apply and when your file is complete. These are the dates the province gives:

The province lists the wait as 8 weeks on its apply page and 8 to 10 weeks on its status page. Plan for up to 10.

When will my payment arrive? Our math

These dates are our own math, not official dates. We added 8 and 10 weeks to the day you apply. If the province asks you for a paper, the clock stops until you send it.

The lesson: apply early. The rebate is the same $400 in October or in March, but the winter heating bills come first.

How to check your heating rebate status

  1. Find the confirmation number you got when you applied online.
  2. Open the province's status page and follow the link to the status tool.
  3. Type in your confirmation number and your postal code.
  4. Read what it says. The province says the page shows whether your application was received or approved.

If you mailed a paper form, the online tool has no number for you. Use the contact link on the province's program page to ask about your file. Keep a copy of what you mailed and the day you mailed it.

Why your payment may be late

The province says it can take longer if it needs more papers or if part of the form is missing. These are the things to check:

How you get the money

The province pays by direct deposit if your tax refund is direct deposited. If not, it mails a cheque to your address.

What to do while you wait

The $400 helps with one winter. Nova Scotia has bigger programs that lower the bill for good. A Home Energy Assessment can lead to up to $5,000 in rebates, and HomeWarming gives free upgrades to lower-income homeowners. See our Nova Scotia rebate guide for every open program.
