The record
CBS Boston's I-Team ran multiple investigations into Mass Save rebate delays. The Massachusetts Attorney General's consumer protection office received more than 30 formal complaints about the program within a single year. Homeowners described waiting close to six months for checks. At least one case dragged past a year. One rebate was denied outright because a 2006 weatherization certification was ruled "too old," despite the home not having changed.
Mass Save's official processing window is 8-12 weeks. The complaints paint a very different picture of what actually happens once you've completed the work and filed the paperwork.
Why we're covering this, not hiding it
HomePowerRebate isn't affiliated with Mass Save, Eversource, or National Grid. We don't get paid based on how good Mass Save looks. That's exactly why we think this is worth writing about directly instead of only publishing rebate amounts and moving on — a homeowner deciding whether to invest $12,000 in a heat pump deserves to know both numbers: what you're supposed to get, and what the actual collection process has looked like for other people.
What actually helps
Mass Save did respond — a new rebate-processing vendor was brought in specifically to work through the backlog. And the underlying rebate amounts are genuinely strong: up to $9,500 for a heat pump, up to $25,000 income-qualified. The program itself works. The processing pipeline is what needs pressure sometimes.
If you're mid-delay right now, escalation actually works: DPU (877-886-5066), then the AG's consumer protection division (617-727-8400), and — documented as genuinely effective — local media. Several homeowners in the CBS coverage had checks arrive within days of their story airing.
