What Connecticut pays for a heat pump in 2026
Each card names the Energize CT page it comes from. Rates change during the year, so ask your installer to show the current rate on the quote.
Energy optimization incentive (replacing oil, gas, propane or electric heat)
For air source and air-to-water heat pumps that replace fossil fuel or electric resistance heating. The rate was $1,000 per ton earlier in 2026 and is $1,500 for installs on or after September 1, 2026. The unit must be on the program's Qualified Product List and installed by a contractor in the Energize CT Heat Pump Installer Network.
Standard air source heat pump incentive
For heat pumps used for cooling only, added to unconditioned spaces, or replacing an existing heat pump. It does not apply when you replace oil, gas, propane or electric resistance heat. That case uses the higher rebate above.
Smart-E Loan
Energize CT lists financing for the energy optimization incentive at rates as low as 1.99% through December 31, 2026. We did not read the loan terms, so ask for the current term and limit.
Federal tax credits (25C and 25D)
The federal home improvement and clean energy credits ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, so there is no federal credit for a 2026 install.
An example using only the posted rates: a 3-ton heat pump that replaces an oil furnace and is installed after September 1, 2026 would earn 3 x $1,500 = $4,500. The same unit installed before September 1 at $1,000 per ton would have earned $3,000. Tonnage is measured by cooling capacity, where one ton is 12,000 BTU/h, so your installer should state it on the quote.
Which rebate do you qualify for?
Energize CT splits heat pump rebates by what the heat pump replaces. If it replaces oil, propane, natural gas or electric resistance heat, you use the energy optimization incentive at $1,500 per ton, up to $10,000. If it does not, for example a cooling-only unit, an added unit in a space that had no heating and cooling, or a replacement of an existing heat pump, you use the standard incentive at $250 per ton, up to $2,500. They are not stacked on the same unit, so make sure your installer picks the right one and writes it on the quote.
Why the date matters: September 1
The rate for replacing fossil fuel or electric resistance heat went up on September 1, 2026, from $1,000 to $1,500 per ton. If your install date falls near that line, the installation date, not the date you signed, decides which rate applies. Both rebates are for installations between January 1 and December 31, 2026. Energize CT can change rates during the year, so keep your invoice and installation date.
Rules your installer has to meet
The heat pump has to be on the program's Qualified Product List and it has to be installed by a contractor in the Energize CT Heat Pump Installer Network. Energize CT says installations are subject to random post-inspections. A contractor outside the network cannot earn you the rebate, so check the installer list before you ask for quotes. Energize CT's program documents describe the program for Eversource and United Illuminating electric customers. Confirm your utility with the program.
Financing
Energize CT lists Smart-E Loan financing with rates as low as 1.99% through December 31, 2026 for the energy optimization incentive. We did not read the term, the limit or the credit rules, so ask the lender for them before you plan around the rate. Older pages show different Smart-E rates, which is another reason to ask for a current quote.
What we could not confirm
Energize CT's site blocks automated readers, so we could not read the pages ourselves. The figures here come from a summary of the program's two heat pump pages supplied to us on October 10, 2026. A search result also described an income-based tier at $1,500 per ton for installs from April 1, 2026, and we could not tell how that fits with the September 1 date. We also did not read the rules for ground source heat pumps or the bonus for combining a heat pump with a home energy assessment. If you fall into one of those cases, ask Energize CT directly.
Should you wait for the federal rebate?
Canada's National Heat Pump Rebate does not apply in Connecticut. In the United States, the federal credit that helped pay for heat pumps (25C) ended for work placed in service after December 31, 2025. For a 2026 install, Energize CT is the main help, and the rebate is open now. If your system is failing this winter, do not wait.
How to get an Energize CT heat pump rebate
- Decide what the heat pump replaces: oil, propane, natural gas or electric resistance heat (the higher rebate) or something else (the standard rebate).
- Choose a contractor from the Energize CT Heat Pump Installer Network and ask each quote to show the tonnage, the rebate rate and the install date.
- Check that the heat pump model is on the Qualified Product List.
- Have the contractor install the system. Keep your invoice, model number and installation date.
- Apply through Energize CT and ask the program for the current application deadline and forms.
- If you want financing, ask about the Smart-E Loan before you start work.

Common questions
How much is the Connecticut heat pump rebate in 2026?
Energize CT pays $1,500 per ton, up to $10,000, for a heat pump that replaces oil, propane, natural gas or electric resistance heat and is installed on or after September 1, 2026. It paid $1,000 per ton earlier in 2026. A standard rebate of $250 per ton, up to $2,500, covers other heat pump installs.
What counts as a ton for the Connecticut rebate?
Energize CT uses the AHRI cooling capacity, where one ton is 12,000 BTU/h. Your installer should state the tonnage on the quote.
Do I need a specific installer in Connecticut?
Yes. The heat pump must be installed by a contractor in the Energize CT Heat Pump Installer Network, and the model must be on the Qualified Product List.
Can I get both Connecticut heat pump rebates on one unit?
No. The higher rebate is for heat pumps replacing oil, gas, propane or electric resistance heat. The standard rebate excludes those replacements.
Is there a federal tax credit for a heat pump in 2026?
No. The federal home improvement credit (25C) and clean energy credit (25D) ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
Can I finance a heat pump in Connecticut?
Energize CT lists Smart-E Loan financing with rates as low as 1.99% through December 31, 2026. We did not read the loan terms, so ask the lender for the term and limit.
Why do some sites show different Connecticut amounts?
The rate changed during 2026 and other programs overlap. Energize CT's site blocks automated readers, so we worked from a summary of its pages and flagged what we could not confirm. Check the current rate with your installer.
