How to pick one of these installers

The list tells you who is allowed to do the work. It does not tell you who is best, and takeCHARGE says so. Newfoundland Power and NL Hydro do not endorse any one company. So do a little homework:

  1. Call two or three companies in your area. Ask each for a written quote.
  2. Ask if they are still on takeCHARGE's list. The list we copied is dated February 2024, so check before you sign anything.
  3. Ask how they sized the system. This program pays for whole-home heating. takeCHARGE says fewer than 1 in 100 homes can heat the whole house with one mini-split.
  4. Ask about backup heat. A central heat pump needs backup heat that is the right size and turns on by itself.
  5. Ask who does the electrical work. takeCHARGE recommends a registered electrical contractor working under permit.
  6. Ask who removes the oil tank and proves it. You need that proof to finish the rebate.
  7. Get pre-approval first. Work started before pre-approval is not covered.

What your quote has to show

takeCHARGE's application checklist asks for an itemized quote. It must show the model numbers, the electrical costs, the labour and the materials. It must also give the installer's name, company, phone number and address. Ask for all of that up front and you will not have to go back for it.

You also need your oil receipts, your electricity account number and a photo of your oil tank's HOST tag. The HOST tag is a small brass tag on the tank's vent pipe. Take the photo before the tank is taken away. Our Oil to Electric page walks through every step.

Why we do not rank these companies

Other installer lists on our site are ranked by Google reviews. This one is not. takeCHARGE's list is the only thing that decides who can do Oil to Electric work, and we have not matched these companies to Google reviews. We will not guess at ratings. For now the list is in A to Z order, and you can filter it by area, by what the company installs and by heat pump brand.

Are you an installer who is not on the list?

takeCHARGE runs the list. To ask about being added, email OiltoElectric@TakeChargeNL.ca or call 1-800-663-2802. takeCHARGE's heat pump lists are for journeyperson refrigeration mechanics and for installers certified by a heat pump maker. Electric boiler and furnace installers have their own list.

How the Oil to Electric steps fit together

  1. Pick an installer from the list above and get an itemized written quote.
  2. Check your income on takeCHARGE's income chart so you know which stream you are in.
  3. Gather your oil receipts (12 months, at least 500 litres), your electricity account number and your oil tank HOST tag photo.
  4. Apply online on takeCHARGE's page, or print the paper form.
  5. Wait for pre-approval. The incentive is then held in your name for 180 days.
  6. Your installer installs the equipment. The old oil tank must be removed and you must prove it.
  7. Your installer sends the final photos and papers, and takeCHARGE pays the approved amount to the installer.

Common questions

Do I have to use an installer from the list?

Yes. takeCHARGE says customers must use a participating installer to be eligible for an incentive. The incentive is paid straight to the installer.

My installer is not on the list. What can I do?

Ask them to email OiltoElectric@TakeChargeNL.ca or call 1-800-663-2802 to ask about being added. Until they are on the list, their work will not qualify.

How up to date is this list?

takeCHARGE's own PDF says it was updated in February 2024. We read it on October 27, 2026. Companies can come and go, so confirm with the installer and with takeCHARGE before you sign.

Why do some companies show up with more than one label?

takeCHARGE publishes three lists: journeyperson refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics who install heat pumps, installers certified by a heat pump maker, and installers of electric boilers and furnaces. A journeyperson is a trade-certified worker. We joined them by company, so one company can have more than one label.

Does takeCHARGE recommend one of these companies?

No. The list says Newfoundland Power and NL Hydro do not endorse any one individual or company. It does recommend choosing a certified individual and a registered electrical contractor working under permit.

Who pays the installer?

takeCHARGE pays the approved incentive straight to your installer. You pay anything above the approved amount. Always ask for the full price in writing before work starts.

Which heat pump brands can these companies install?

The manufacturer certified list names the brands each company can install, such as LG, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Kerr, Comfort Aire and others. Use the brand filter above. Companies that are only on the refrigeration mechanic list do not show brands.
