What HPCN is

The HPCN is managed by the Home Performance Stakeholder Council, an independent not-for-profit. It isn't a government licence. Contractors don't pay a fee to be listed.

What members must meet

• Extra training in the house-as-a-system, heat loss and heat gain calculations, and ventilation
• At least three years in business in BC
• Best-practice and rebate program training
• WorkSafeBC compliance, a valid business licence, general liability insurance and standard warranties
• A commitment to ethical business practices

Which rebates need an HPCN contractor

• BC Hydro heat pump rebate (up to $4,000 when replacing electric heat)
• BC Hydro insulation rebates
• CleanBC Energy Savings Program (income-qualified) uses its own registered-contractor list. Check Better Homes BC.

If your contractor isn't eligible, you can lose the rebate. Check before you sign, not after.

How to check a contractor

1. Search the Better Homes BC contractor tool or BC Hydro's contractor search.
2. Filter by your area, the upgrade and the rebate program.
3. Make sure the company name on your quote matches the listing.

What HPCN doesn't guarantee

• Quality: read reviews and ask for references.
• Price: get more than one quote for the same scope.
• Sizing: ask for a written heat-loss calculation.
