A Vernon 1970s split-level
A 1,250 square foot attic at R-18 brought to R-50 adds R-32. The rebate is 0.02 x 32 x 1,250 = $800. Add R-12 to 850 square feet of wall cavity for 0.09 x 12 x 850 = $918. The total is $1,718 by our arithmetic on the published formula.
Vernon's homes in numbers
The 2021 Census counted 19,795 households in Vernon. Of those, 8,590 (43%) live in homes built before 1981, and 3,835 are owner-occupied detached houses from that era. About 26% live in apartments and 66% own their home. Only 5.8% say their home needs major repairs, so most Vernon houses are sound but dated.
Colder than Kelowna, milder than Kamloops
Vernon's average January low from 2015 to 2024 was -4.8°C, and the coldest day was -27.2°C. That is cooler than Kelowna's -3.2°C on the same record and not far from Kamloops at -6.1°C. A few weeks each winter push a heating system hard, which is when an under-insulated attic costs the most.
Which program applies: BC Hydro or FortisBC?
BC Hydro's rebate is for homes heated mainly by electricity: baseboards, electric furnaces, heat pumps or radiant heat. A natural gas, oil or propane home is not eligible. If you heat with gas, FortisBC's listing uses the same formula and is the one to use. Pick the program that matches your main heat source, not the one with the bigger-sounding name.
Which insulation to choose
BC Hydro accepts batts, loose fill, board and spray foam. Vernon's older houses usually need loose fill in the attic and blown-in material for closed walls. Compare quotes by finished R-value, not thickness. The rebate cannot exceed the invoice cost, so a small job is paid at what you paid.
If your income is lower
BC Hydro sends income-qualified customers to the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program instead, and the two cannot be combined. The 2026 program document lists no insulation or window rebates, so for lower incomes the free Energy Conservation Assistance Program is the route to ask about.
