How much you get

Mass Save runs six residential appliance rebates statewide, funded through Eversource for New Bedford customers. You must be replacing an existing electric appliance with a new ENERGY STAR certified unit — these are swap rebates, not rebates for adding an appliance where none existed before.

Mass Save's fridge and freezer offer is a recycling program with pickup of your old, working unit, not a purchase rebate — check the current reward on masssave.com before you schedule. The biggest appliance rebate is for induction: $500 when you switch from a gas or propane stove (MassCEC, checked September 26, 2026). None of these rebates cover the full price of the appliance.

Buying the right appliance for a New Bedford household

New Bedford's coastal salt air is tough on any appliance with an exterior vent hood, which is one practical reason a heat pump dryer's sealed, no-vent design tends to last longer here. New Bedford's older South Coast housing stock, much of it triple-deckers built for the city's mill and fishing workforce, tends to have narrow utility closets with limited venting options.

A heat pump dryer is worth planning around if your current dryer is on its way out. These units condense moisture internally instead of exhausting hot air outdoors, so many don't need an exterior vent at all, and they run on roughly half the electricity of a standard resistance dryer because they recycle heat instead of wasting it. The tradeoff is real: cycles typically run 20 to 40 minutes longer than a conventional dryer. Browse heat pump dryers at Home Depot →

Induction cooking is worth considering too if you're replacing a range. Induction heats the pan directly through a magnetic field rather than heating an element first, so water boils faster and the cooktop surface stays cooler, a real safety advantage in a household with kids. The catch is cookware: induction needs magnetic pots and pans, generally cast iron or certain stainless steel, so an all-aluminum or all-copper set won't work without swapping a few pieces. Not every appliance carrying an ENERGY STAR label clears Mass Save's bar for the higher rebate tiers — ENERGY STAR Most Efficient models qualify for more than standard ENERGY STAR units on some categories, so check the current qualified product list before buying rather than assuming the label alone is enough. Worth saying plainly: this rebate is for replacing an electric appliance already in your home, not for adding one where there wasn't one before. If your current fridge or washer still works fine, the smaller rebate amounts here rarely justify swapping it out ahead of schedule.

How to claim it

  1. Purchase your appliance from any retailer — New Bedford has a Home Depot on Hathaway Road, and a Best Buy a short drive away in Dartmouth, both stocking qualified models
  2. Recycle the old unit through New Bedford's bulk-item pickup program rather than curbside trash
  3. Apply online at masssave.com with your dated receipt, or claim the instant discount at checkout for induction cooktops and ranges where offered

Common questions

Are appliance rebates available in New Bedford?

Yes. Mass Save funds rebates on ENERGY STAR clothes washers, clothes dryers, heat pump clothes dryers, and refrigerator/freezer recycling for New Bedford residential Eversource customers.

What appliance rebate is worth prioritizing in New Bedford?

If you cook with gas or propane, the $500 induction cooktop rebate is the largest appliance rebate. A heat pump dryer only gets the $50 ENERGY STAR dryer rebate, but it can cut drying energy roughly in half compared to a standard electric dryer.

Is there a South Coast-specific appliance program on top of Mass Save?

No dedicated New Bedford program exists beyond Mass Save's statewide offer. PACE New Bedford and other local nonprofits run separate weatherization assistance for income-eligible households, which is worth checking alongside this rebate if you qualify.

Your utility: Eversource

Eversource is New Bedford's electricity distributor and funds the Mass Save appliance rebates through ratepayer efficiency charges. Eversource serves New Bedford, and is the contact if an older South End or North End triple-decker's electrical panel needs an upgrade before adding a new 240V appliance. Check the Mass Save appliances page →, City of New Bedford's Department of Facilities and Fleet Management's energy and sustainability page →, and New Bedford's New Bedford trash and recycling rules → before disposing of your old appliance.
