How much you get
Free for electrically heated homes, or $45 off at checkout — Two real options: homes heated with electricity can get a smart thermostat installed free through Efficiency Nova Scotia's Free Product Installation program, and anyone can take $45 off at checkout at participating stores on a smart thermostat made for electric heat. The Eco Shift demand-response program is paused to new enrollments as of April 9, 2026. Many older Cape Breton homes have electric baseboards, so the free option is worth checking first.
The $45 instant rebate is worth it if you'd rather pick your own model than take the free one — a smaller discount, but more choice. Both programs are province-wide, so CBRM homes get the same deal as Halifax.

What these thermostats cost around Cape Breton
The same $45 instant rebate applies here as in Halifax since it's an Efficiency Nova Scotia program. It only covers eligible thermostats for electric heat, so the others are listed at straight retail. Check the eligible-models list before you buy.
- Built for electric baseboard and in-floor heat, common in older Cape Breton housing stock
- Ongoing winter peak-event credits on top of the instant rebate
- Better suited to forced-air or ducted systems than baseboard
- Room sensors help with uneven heat in older homes
- Works on most 2-wire and 4-wire central systems
- No hub required
- Another baseboard-compatible option

Common questions
Is the smart thermostat free in Cape Breton?
Yes. Homes heated with electricity can get a smart thermostat installed free through Efficiency Nova Scotia's Free Product Installation program. Anyone can also take $45 off at checkout at participating stores on a smart thermostat made for electric heat.
Can I get both the free thermostat and the $45 instant rebate?
Not on the same unit. The free Efficiency Nova Scotia thermostat and $45 Efficiency Nova Scotia instant rebate are two separate paths to the same kind of device — pick whichever suits whether you want a specific model or the free option.
Your utility: Nova Scotia Power
Nova Scotia Power is the local electric utility for Cape Breton. The smart thermostat rebate above comes from a province-wide program, so which utility bills you doesn't change what you qualify for. Where it can matter: Nova Scotia Power is who to contact about your home's electrical service capacity if your installer flags an upgrade, and who bills the electricity your new equipment uses once it's running. Some utilities layer their own incentive on top of the province rebate — worth a quick call to Nova Scotia Power to ask directly.
