How much you get
There's no flat dollar rebate for a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) or energy recovery ventilator (ERV) from PG&E in San Jose the way there is for a heat pump or water heater. Ventilation equipment simply isn't a category PG&E funds in its residential rebate catalog right now.
San Jose's newer subdivisions are built to Title 24's tighter envelope standards, which means many recently-built homes already require mechanical ventilation by code — the rebate question is really about whether you get money back for equipment you may already need.
It's also worth ruling out the two programs homeowners sometimes assume cover this. TECH Clean California funds heat pump HVAC and heat pump water heater installs, not ventilation equipment — and as of late 2025 its single-family heat pump incentives were fully reserved anyway. And the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C), which used to cover 30% of some efficiency upgrades, expired December 31, 2025; even while it was active, it never listed HRVs or ERVs among qualifying equipment. So for now, an HRV or ERV in San Jose is an out-of-pocket upgrade.
