Federal, provincial, and utility rebates for solar, batteries, heat pumps, and efficiency upgrades. Which one is right for your home?
The biggest rebate in BC, and HomePowerRebate specializes in this one. $1.1 billion program available only to BC Hydro customers (not FortisBC).
Heads up: the original federal Grant and Loan are now closed to new applicants. The new income-based Affordability Program is expanding to BC — here's what that means for you.
If you're not served by BC Hydro, FortisBC has different programs. Note: solar + battery rebates are less generous than Power Smart 2.0.
| Program | Solar rebate | Battery rebate | Heat pump | Insulation | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BC Hydro Power Smart 2.0 | Up to $5k | Up to $5k | Up to $4k | Partial | BC Hydro only |
| Canada Greener Homes Grant & Loan | Closed | Closed | Closed | Closed | Closed to new applicants (Oct 2025) |
| Greener Homes Affordability (CGHAP) | No | No | 100% | 100% | Low/median income · expanding to BC |
| BC Hydro Income-based | No | No | Free | Free | BC Hydro + income < $80k |
| FortisBC Programs | Limited | Limited | Yes | Yes | FortisBC only |
Yes — if you qualify for multiple programs, you can often claim rebates from each (subject to program rules). Here's a realistic example:
| BC Hydro solar rebate | +$5,000 |
| BC Hydro battery rebate (enrolled in Peak Saver within 14 days) | +$5,000 |
| Peak Saver rewards (approx., over 10 years) | +$3,000 |
| Total | $13,000 |
Watch out: skip Peak Saver enrollment (or miss the 14-day window after interconnection approval) and the battery rebate drops from $5,000 to $1,500. Your installer should handle this — ours do.
Always confirm eligibility with each program before starting work. Some programs have caps or rules about combining.
Step 1: Know your utility. BC Hydro or FortisBC? Your utility determines which programs you qualify for.
Step 2: Check your income. Some programs offer free or heavily subsidized upgrades if you qualify by income.
Step 3: Get a quote. Contact an approved installer. Use HomePowerRebate to find one in your city →
Step 4: Apply for rebates. Your installer can help with paperwork, but you're ultimately responsible for applications.
