Why Your BC Rebate Got Rejected

Your application was denied. Here are the 5 most common reasons—and how to fix them.

The 5 Most Common Rejection Reasons

#1: Wrong Contractor (30–40% of Rejections)

Your contractor isn't HPCN registered (Heat Pump Contractor Network). As of June 1, 2026, all BC heat pump and battery installations MUST use an HPCN-registered installer. If your contractor isn't registered, the rebate is denied—no exceptions.

🔧 Fix it: Before you hire anyone, ask: "Are you HPCN registered?" If they don't know what that means, hire someone else. It's that simple.

#2: Applied After Installation

You got the work done, then applied for the rebate. That's too late. You need an approval code BEFORE any work starts. If you apply after installation, the rebate is rejected.

🔧 Fix it: Apply first. Get your approval code. Then hire the contractor and start work. The code expires in 3 months (as of July 2026), so don't wait.

#3: Blurry Photos

You uploaded a photo of the equipment nameplate, but it's blurry. The government can't read the model number or serial number. No proof = no rebate.

🔧 Fix it: Take photos in daylight. Make sure the nameplate is crystal clear. Test it on your phone—if YOU can't read it easily, re-take it.

#4: Equipment Not on Approved List

You picked a heat pump, battery, or solar panel that's not on BC Hydro's approved equipment list. Mid-installation budget cuts that swap to cheaper equipment will kill your rebate.

🔧 Fix it: Ask your contractor: "Is this model on the BC Hydro approved list?" Before you sign anything, verify. Don't assume.

#5: Missing or Wrong Paperwork

Your address on the form doesn't match your invoice. Or the contractor's license number is wrong. Or the model/serial numbers are missing. Small details that sink applications.

🔧 Fix it: Triple-check everything before you submit. Mailing address, installation address, contractor name and license, equipment model and serial numbers. If anything is wrong, fix it first.

The Checklist Before You Apply

What if You Were Already Rejected?

If your rebate was denied, contact BC Hydro's rebate support team. They'll tell you why. If it's one of the above reasons, fix it and re-apply. Most of the time, resubmitting with the right info gets you approved.

Bottom Line

The #1 mistake: Using a non-HPCN contractor. The #2 mistake: Applying after the work is done. Avoid those two, and you're already ahead of 90% of applicants.
